Pathema is one of the several BRCs established as part of the NIAID’s biodefense initiative. The objective of this center is to provide comprehensive genomics resources to the scientific community for conducting basic and applied research on organisms considered agents of bioterrorism or causing re−emerging infectious diseases. As part of this effort, TIGR is developing a comprehensive Bacillus−specific database and web resource that specifically targets the analysis and data needs of the Bacillus research community. An extensive subjective assessment of the types of research and information the Bacillus community is currently conducting and gathering, has been initiated, as well as the types of tools and utilities those researchers are frequently utilizing. The data collected from this assessment is being used to design and implement a customized suite of sophisticated bioinformatics software, an extensive library of literature and manually curated data, and comparative analysis tools customized to retrieve, display, and compute results in a way best suited for the Bacillus researcher. Additionally, the sequence data of all Bacillus species and strains, where available and/or upon user request, will be available for download from this site.
By conducting a meeting workshop at the Bacillus−ACT Conference, it is hoped that Bacillus researchers may be exposed to the types of tools and information available on Pathema, as well as provide them the opportunity to offer additional input for us to further customize this resource to better meet their research needs.
