Bacillus cereus group Multi-Datatype Genetic Network

The superclusters of genetically closely related isolates sharing identical MLST (based on any of the 5 schemes) and AFLP profiles have been mapped onto the MLST+AFLP phylogenetic supertree in order to give a combined and integrative genetic and phylogenetic overview ("snapshot") of the Bacillus cereus group population. Genetic snapshots have not been built using MLEE data because MLEE, which is based on protein profiles, has a much lower resolution power than the DNA-based methods MLST and AFLP. The phylogenetic position of each supercluster is given by a randomly chosen isolate selected to represent the supercluster. The superclusters are displayed as filled lightblue boxes. All other individual isolates in the supertree correspond to singletons that do not share identical MLST or AFLP profiles with any isolate in the database. The isolates can be colored by species or source (origin), or left uncolored. The global integrative genetic snapshot is drawn as an unrooted network in SVG (scalable vector graphics) format using the "neato" program of the Graphviz package and can be browsed using the Java ZGRViewer. It should be noted that, because of layout constraints, the branch lengths in the unrooted network do not correspond to the actual branch lengths in the supertree and all superclusters are drawn at a fixed size independent of the number of isolates they contain.
Click on the navigation buttons to move in any direction and zoom in or out. You can also use the arrows keys on your keyboard or left-click and drag the light purple square in the Overview panel to move around the network. Moreover, the network can be moved directly by left-clicking and dragging it, and zoomed in or out using the mouse wheel. Left-clicking on a supercluster or isolate name will zoom in on that supercluster or isolate. Middle-button clicking on a supercluster or isolate name will link to an information page with details about that supercluster or isolate. Middle-button clicking on an internal node will load a new page displaying the subtree including all descendants of that node in the supertree.
